Still Doing the Tourist Bit

Westminster Abbey is gorgeous - without a doubt. It used to be a Catholic church. It is now owned by the Royal Family and the Queen is head of it. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take photos inside. We saw the tomb of the unknown soldier, Poet's Corner (Chaucer is buried here!), Edward the Confessor's tomb (he built the Abbey, I believe), Newton's tomb, Queen Elizabeth I's tomb, and so many others. There are more than 2,000 people buried there! The architecture is beyond me. Gothic style. I couldn't stop looking above me. They boy's choir performs for Evensong service weekdays at 5:00 p.m. According to our tourguide, they are definitely worth listening to so I'm planning on coming back to check them out.

Before every crosswalk, there are pedestrian instructions to tell you to "LOOK RIGHT" or "LOOK LEFT." So safety conscious!


Today, we went to Portobello Market off the Nottinghill Gate stop. Delightful! Crowded beyond belief, but the weather was perfect. So many clothing shops, army/navy shops, antique stands, and food stands. My favorites were costume jewelry shop, the lady selling her old bags she's collected from around the world, and the old print and antique book shop. Encyclopedias published in the 1800s, old maps of America, and original photos of men's football teams from the 1950s. Awesome.

Topped off the day by picnicking in Hyde Park, but without the picnic. We got attacked by gnats as we were walking out of the park. Karen nearly choked on one. Eeeewwww, gross!
